The Role

We are looking for a Senior Competency Manager to lead the professional delivery of the Competence Management System (CMS) for Customer Experience colleagues within the Central Operating Section.

This is a key safety-critical leadership role, responsible for assuring the competence of operational colleagues through assessment, coaching and continuous development. You will work closely with station management teams, internal specialists and external industry partners to enhance operational safety, resilience and capability, reporting into the Group Station Manager

 

What You Will Do

  • Lead, manage and continuously improve the Competence Management System (CMS) for Customer Experience colleagues
  • Undertake practical, safety and non-safety critical assessments to build underpinning knowledge, providing clear, constructive and documented feedback
  • Identify performance risks and design proactive and reactive Competence Development Plans (CDPs)
  • Support and contribute to operational incident investigations and implement learning outcomes
  • Deliver briefings and ensure policies, procedures and safety standards are clearly communicated and understood
  • Monitor operational incidents and trends, recommending and tracking remedial actions
  • Provide assurance to senior management through audits, verification and quality assurance activities
  • Maintain your own operational and assessor competence in line with company and regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to risk assessments, safety improvements and industry best practice initiatives
  • Participate in internal and external working groups to support continuous improvement
  • Support frontline operations during disruption through the step-in programme
  • Take part in an on-call rota, including evenings, weekends and public holidays

 

What You Will Bring:

  • NVQ Level 3 & 4 Assessor and Verification qualification (or working towards)
  • IOSH or equivalent safety qualification
  • Training and/or coaching qualification
  • Recent experience in station or platform management, including train dispatch
  • Strong knowledge of station operations, rules, regulations, fatigue principles and competency development
  • Proven ability to coach, assess and develop colleagues in a supportive and structured way
  • Experience analysing risk, data and performance trends to drive safety improvements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels
  • A proactive, self-motivated approach with strong planning and organisational skills
  • A calm, decisive and safety-focused mindset in high-pressure or changing environments
  • A collaborative leadership style with the ability to build strong relationships across teams
